Martin Van Buren was the 8th president of the United States, serving from 1837 to 1841. He founded the Democratic Party with Andrew Jackson and became his vice president in 1833. Under Jackson, he was U.S. Minister to the United Kingdom and the 10th secretary of state. He was also Attorney General and U.S. Senator to New York, and became its governor for a short time. He emerged later in his life as an elder statesman and abolitionist who led the Free Soil Party in the 1848 presidential election.
